Bold Prints on Sofas

Thursday, May 31, 2012

I've blogged about this very topic before here, but when I saw this image over at Savvy Home, I couldn't resist doing another post on the subject.  Don't we all love neutral sofas because they provide a clean canvas for trendy, colorful throw pillows that can be changed out whenever the latest fabric obsession presents itself? Of course we do, but these sofas with bold prints are kind of new and exciting again!
This is the image that reaffirmed my love for printed sofas.  It's from Suzanne and Lauren McGrath's book, Good Bones, Great Pieces.

I found this image on Betsey Speert's blog, which, oddly enough, is called Betsy Speert's Blog.  I adore the snow leopard print on the sofa!
Color enthusiast Miles Redd for Oscar de la Renta Home

A gorgeous Clarence House print works perfectly on this sofa. Interior design by Jamie Rummerfield.  P.S.  I spy what is surely Scalamandre's Leopardo on the upholstered ottoman.  I told you animal prints are neutral!

Outstanding

Another sofa with a bold print combined with an animal print - and a dash of Marilyn.

Could you be so bold with your sofa?

Office Nooks

Tuesday, May 29, 2012

I've added yet another item on the long list of projects to be completed at Project Dollhouse.  Funny, it seems like for every project that gets scratched off the list there are two more to take its place!  Anyway, we don't have a dedicated office space in the house (other than a dark corner of the basement - not the most inspiring workspace) so I'm looking at options to create a little office nook. So far the most promising prospect seems to be the guest room closet, since we don't have many overnight guests (other than family).
I don't think this will be too hard to pull off.  We'll just have to remove the folding doors, install some shelving - and probably add an electrical outlet .
I love the built-in desk and the swing arm lamp - perfect for task lighting.

This setup is well thought-out. The work/conference table is positioned just outside of the computer area, and the chair on wheels makes it easy to access both work stations.

Hmm, maybe there's something to be said for leaving the doors in place.  It would be nice to close off a messy work area.

I like the sophisticated look of this tiny office space.  A white lacquer Parson's table is never wrong.

This office tucked into an alcove is nice.  Never underestimate the impact of well placed and beautiful lighting.
Great looking spaces, right? Am I the only one who noticed the absence of office necessities; like a printer, fax, modem, and other computer equipment?

Recent Finds

Sunday, May 20, 2012

The shopping gods have been smiling on me lately!  It's been a while since I've shared my favorite finds- and there are some good ones - so let's get to it!

I've been lucking out in the art department.  See below.

I was very excited to find this original signed abstract painting by Mid-Century artist Tom Hayward.  Although the colors are neutral, it's a bold piece and came complete with the original chrome frame.

Also found this fun Morrocan style table.  The base is collapsible and the top lifts off to use as a tray. Boho-to-go.

I also scored this Baker Furniture end table.  The gold hardware is pretty and it has the most incredible  burled wood finish.

Sweet thrift store lamp, complete with shade. That's a lotta cute for  $4.

I just found a pair of these euro shams at a junk store by my Mother's house in Atlanta.  They're brand new and the fabric is incredible.  I'll probably keep these for my almost done master bedroom.

And of course, no shopping post would be complete without the chairs!!

I have two of these Mid-Century caned wing chairs in desperate need of makeovers.

And I most excited about these:
Mid-Century High Back Chairs.  Yes, I have two, although the companion chair met a rather unfortunate fate:
No worries!  I'm going to take some inspiration from Barrie Benson's Mid-Century similar chairs.  White frames with a snazzy bright fabric.

I'd love to hear about your recent finds.  Anything good come your way?

Animal Prints are Neutral

Thursday, May 17, 2012

Do you like to use animal prints?  Years ago I favored using a little leopard print and then my allegiance switched over to zebra prints. I still love them both, and I've also admired antelope, tiger, and even a little python. The thing about most animal prints is that they can fit in just about anywhere, especially if they have the same coloration we see in the natural world.
I can't be certain, but that pillow looks like Scalamandre's Leopardo in silk velvet.  I'd love to have some pillows done in that fabric, but the husband insists we make the mortgage payment instead.

Another favorite, again Scalamandre' silk velvet, this time it's LeTigre.

Again it's Le Tigre, on a decadent upholstered ottoman. Have you noticed Miles Redd uses this print frequently?

I just love this mix - the very modern zebra bench with the more rustic elements. Lovely!

This room was decorated by Elsie de Wolf years ago and it's still current.  Note the leopard pillows on the yellow velvet settees.

Todd Romano decorated this space.  The antelope carpet is unexpected and so chic.

Finally, this image has been all around the blogosphere and probably on everybody's Pinterest, but I think it's worth seeing again. Emerald green and leopard were made for each other!

So, I'd love to know how you feel about animal prints.  Do you have a favorite, do you love them all, or do you stay away from them?

Book Displays for All

Sunday, May 13, 2012

So we've all seen and lusted over those beautifully styled bookcases that are all over the blogosphere and Pinterest

but what about those of us who have book collections but don't have book cases to store and display them?  I'm facing this very situation in my not-ready-to-revealed family room at Project Dollhouse, and I plan to use a big round table as a makeshift library.

I like this option because the books are easily accessible and make a stylish display.

Rather than a floral piece in the center of the table, I'll use a big lamp. A few chairs will flank the table to make it even more functional.

I like how these books are stacked and styled with the horse bookends.  This option would be pretty easy to create on top of a mantel, console table or chest of drawers.

A gorgeous etagere like this is a great alternative to built-in bookcases.

Even a little bar cart can function as a portable library.  Brilliant!

How do you display your books?

Pagoda Lampshades

Wednesday, May 2, 2012

About a year ago I got a pair of big chunky brass lamps from Merchants on Main.  They were a consigned item in another booth and they weren't drawing much interest.  I bought them thinking I would use them in a client's living room but as it turned out they were just too big and they obstructed the view of the portrait they would be flanking. As a seasoned pro in justifying any purchase I make, I decided to keep them for myself.  They're  good quality lamps and I knew the right opportunity would come along to celebrate their awesomeness.
Here's one of the pair sans the nasty shades they came with. As luck would have it, I came across a pair of black paper shades with metallic gold lining that were a perfect fit! I was sure the black shades and the brass lamps would live happily ever after.

But fate intervened.  I was at my friend Bob Grove's (of Hometown Pickers fame) warehouse when I spotted this in his stacks of lampshades. (!!!!)

There were two (!!) and they came home with me. And they fit my brass lamps perfectly.

Action photo of brass lamps with new Pagoda shades:

The lesson here is:  it's good to be in the right place at the right time and have friends with Pagoda lampshades.
