Art Discovery with Reader Discount

Thursday, October 18, 2012

Do you know my favorite thing about the internets?  It's the way you can connect with like-minded people hundreds of miles away that you otherwise never would have had the opportunity to meet!  Case and point:  last week I got a nice email from a talented artist gal named Carolyn Shultz about some lamps I had for sale on a post I did months ago. Through the magic of Pinterest and all the associated linky stuff, she found my little blog and contacted me about the lamp. We had a nice cyber chat, which led me to her website- and (holy talented!), you have got to see these paintings!

Completely gorgeous, right?  And Carolyn is not only a talented painter, she's also a little design-obsessed (kindred spirits much?) and many of her paintings are inspired by her favorite fabrics combined with some floral loveliness.

Carolyn also has a wonderful selection of abstract paintings.  This little number is already sold, but I just love paintings that are a celebration of gorgeous color!

Another ikat piece.

And here's my personal favorite!  If you've checked in on this blog from time to time, you probably know that I have a soft spot for "pretty", which explains my love for this piece:

So, if you have an area in your home that could use a shot of pretty, check out Blue Poppy Design's Etsy shop!

When you find one or ten paintings you want to purchase, enter the discount code "GREEN20" (with no spaces) and you will receive 20% off your purchase - and that includes commissioned pieces as well!

A great way to kick off an early weekend celebration, no?

PS - stay tuned, I have a fantastic giveaway planned next week.  Here's a little hint:  it starts with "N" and ends with "ovica".

Weekend Victories

Sunday, October 14, 2012

How was your weekend?  I actually got some things done that have been on the back burner for quite a while and even squeezed in a little shopping!

First up, the thrill of victory!  I finished this antique dresser and plan to bring it over to my booth this week.
For those of you who are wondering, the paint I used is Rustoleum's Oil Based High Gloss in Royal Blue.  Right out of the can.  I'm kind of excited about how it turned out. The original finish on this piece was pretty shot, but the lines were fantastic. Once again, paint is the hero!

I also picked up a small herd of brass deer for my booth.

I have high hopes for them this holiday season.  They would be perfect for holiday tablescapes , on the mantel, or even on a coffee table.

Oh, and along the thread of the upcoming holidays, I found a set of vintage mint green ornaments.  I think I'm doing green and gold on my tree this year.  Not the 70's kind.

Speaking of the 70's kind, what do you think of these glasses? I got a set of 6 for my booth, and I think they would be perfect for styling up the bar.

And the headliner:

Teenager pried off of sofa to wash the car - for the very first time.  Some of us found it more amusing than others.

Any Camera Recommendations?

Wednesday, October 10, 2012

I really have to commend those of you who have been kind enough to follow along on my blog the past few years.  My photography skills are sorely lacking and my photography equipment is, well, my phone.  And those Instagram filters can only do so much.

This is where you come in.  I plan to put "new camera" on my Christmas wish list this year, and I'm looking for some recommendations from you.  Said camera should meet the following requirements:

1.  It must be easy to use.  Technology is clearly not my thing and, as a general rule,  I usually check out around the 2nd paragraph of the first chapter of most Owner's Manuals.  And PS, my kids are in school all day so they won't be available to help me until in the evening and even then they won't really want to help me.

2.  It needs to compact enough to come along on shopping trips and hopefully slip into my purse.

3. Here's the biggie - it needs to be affordable.  You'll have to guide me here. Is it even possible to get a camera that takes decent pictures for $300 or less? I don't mind going used, obviously - I mean  you have read this blog, right?.  And, if I do need to get a good used (scratch that ) previously owned camera, any suggestions on where to buy it and what to look for?

That completes today's assignment!

Thanks - and here's to better pictures in the near future!

Down to the Details - Hardware

Sunday, October 7, 2012

Not too long ago I blogged about some easy details you can change or add to your existing pieces to give them a more custom look. You can read that post here.  When I'm shopping for furniture for clients, my booth or my own home, I'm attracted to pieces with great hardware.

Case and point - the credenza in my family room.  When I bought it at a resale shop, it was wearing a very dull and very 1970's brownish gold wood stain finish.  I knew the piece had great lines and I already l loved the hardware, so all it needed was a fresh coat of shiny black paint.

I also bought a pair of these nighstands for my master bedroom because I fell in love with the drawer pulls. You can read about their makeover here.
Here's a thrift store jewelry box I bought because of the lions head pulls and the nail head trim..

And holy wow, we can't forget the original over-the-top brass hardware on my front doors. Which is not to say we bought the house because of the front door hardware, we'll just call it an added bonus.

Here's a much larger version of some lion head pulls. Outstanding against the black doors!  Image from Bijou and Boheme

The first thing that caught my eye in this image was the brass hardware.

Did you already see this bathroom from Brian Patrick Flynn? He cleverly used door knockers as cabinet hardware.

Surely I'm not the only one who bought a piece of furniture because of the hardware. Have you ever done that?

Curtains Outside

Thursday, October 4, 2012

You may recall that back in August  I blogged about adding an awning - and possibly a pair of curtains - to the front entrance over at Project Dollhouse.  This idea is still under consideration, and now that the weather has cooled off a bit in these parts, I thought a post that featured porches with curtains would be a nice farewell to summer.

Do you remember?  This is one of the inspiration images that got ball rolling.

The striped  curtains may be more of a statement than I'm willing to make, but I do like the sense of arrival they give to entries that lack architectural detail.

Curtains also give a cozy, finished feel to porches, and in the image below, provide some much needed privacy. I love the way this porch is furnished, don't you?

Apparently an over-achiever lives here.

All of the white looks so crisp on this little Bungalow - and the yellow door is the perfect finishing touch.

Those risk-taking Novogratz 's decided to go bold with yellow and white stripes - and a cool chandelier.

I'm on board for some curtains outside.  Do you like them too?
